PM Orders Religious Fundamental Review

Phnom Penh: Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia has instructed the Minister of Culture and Religion to convene meetings with religious leaders across the nation to assess the legitimacy and foundations of their respective faiths.

This directive follows the Prime Minister's observation of a growing trend where individuals have claimed divine status, leading to disturbances within society.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Ministry of Environment on Thursday afternoon, December 21, 2023, Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed concern over the disruption caused by groundless religious movements to the societal fabric. He emphasized that while Cambodia respects religious freedom, such freedoms must be rooted in a clear and valid basis, not undermining social values.

He stated, "We need to examine whether all religious activities have a solid foundation or not. Any beliefs lacking a clear basis should undergo scrutiny."

Additionally, the Prime Minister has called upon the Minister of Justice to be involved in this initiative.
